 The 3D-printed objects
This assignment involved creating three objects with the 3D modeling software TinkerCad. The three objects were centered a theme. The theme could be an existing IP such as movies, games, TV shows, etc. As my source, I chose my favorite anime of all time: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I decided on three objects to represent three of the most thematically important characters: Kamina, Simon, and Nia. For Kamina I chose his trademark glasses, as they would be easy to model and instantly recognizable to anyone who has seen the anime. For Simon, I chose the core drill: an object very central to the show itself as Simon is the protagonist. For Nia, I had trouble coming up with something. Her ring, despite its relatively generic design, was the best thing I could think of.
The models
Modeling the glasses was extremely simple, I merely stuck two triangles together. Getting the right shaped triangles was a little difficult, as the settings were finicky. The ring was difficult to do in such a way that it would print correctly. All the small details were problematic. The drill was the most interesting. TinkerCad had a cone-shaped spring shape that I used to cut the groove intro the drill. The end bit was difficult to get right, but I was happy with the rough approximation I came up with.
The objects being modeled. From left to right: Kamina's glasses, Nia's ring, and the core drill. Gurren Lagann is partly a coming-of-age story for its protagonist Simon split into two halves. For the first half, Kamina guides him and motivates him. For the second, he is guided by Nia. So these characters are all massively important in the show.
